Thanksgiving Pies

Thanksgiving was a lot of fun this year. We had a chance to see Rob's Father and my parents in two glutinous days. This year I made a pumpkin pie from a sweet pumpkin. I had never done this before because Martha Stewart told me that canned pumpkin was just as good. Rob had his heart set on a traditional pumpkin pie so I had fun giving it a go.

I had to wash the sweet pumpkin. Cut it into small pieces, and then steam it on the stove top. When that was done, I scrapped the flesh from the skin and mashed it with egg and spices. It was pretty simple. And it turned out pretty tasty too.

After thanksgiving I also made a ham and cheese quiche. I would have made it turkey and cheese, but we didn't do the turkey thing this year.

Pie Chart... Literally

Anuar's Ham and Cheese Quiche

Our lovely friend Anuar came for a visit this weekend and he is a lover of quiche. So I whipped one up this morning. This one had fried ham, onion, garlic, mushroom and queso cheese. Anuar bought a huge bag of queso cheese to make quesadillas and this cheese tastes great in quiche. I've decided Anuar needs to pay us another visit so I have a reason to make a queso, chorizo and jalapeno quiche... mmmm.

United Church of Beloit Sweet Potato Pie

Our church had their traditional thanksgiving feast today. Most members brought a casserole or dessert. I brought a sweet potato pie. The crust turned out very nice. But the kitchen volunteers didn't know it was sweet potato and mixed the pre cut slices in which other people's pumpkin pie... So I think a few people had a surprise when they took a bite.

Ham, mushroom, onion, tomato and cheese Quiche!

Our lovely landlords gave us some farm fresh eggs the other day. So I thought they would go perfect in a quiche. A normal quiche receipe calls for 4-6 eggs. But these chicken eggs were so small I used the whole dozen. This quiche turned out delicious, probably because it has way too much cheese in it.

Welty Environmental Center Fall Fest Pie Contest

This year my church friend Mark told me about a pie contest at the Welty Environmental Center in Beloit, WI. I was excited to meet fellow local pie bakers and to practice my apple pie. I made about four trips to the Apple Hut to buy freshly grown fall apples. I found that they had a local variety that was perfect for baking. They were a little sweet and kept their shape when baked.

So this morning Robert and I took the pie to the center and we returned for judging at 12:30pm. When we came back we found that I was the only person that had submitted a pie. This was a surprise to me because when I spoke with Mark about it, his stories made it should like there were multiple entries in previous years.

I'm not complaining because I won! lol But it was fun to watch everyone eat my pie. I got a ton of compliments and I was sad I couldn't have a slice. I will most definitely do this again next year, and I will help to promote the contest.

This is a photo of one of the practice pies.

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

I made this strawberry rhubarb pie for my boyfriends mother and it turned out great. The texture of the fruit was nice and you could hardly taste any tartness.

Apple Pie for a favor

So a client of my company is going to fix our metal lawn ornament. It is a snowman made out of propane tanks. He holds a beer, smokes a cigar and is smiling. But his cigar fell out of his mouth and I had nothing to weld it back on with.

So this yummy apple pie is for the man assigned to the task of doing it.

Cherry Pie for Kevin

So we have had a boarder for the last couple of months. Kevin has been a really fun roommate and Rob and I are going to miss him dearly. So of course, I made him a cherry pie.

I've tried to make fresh cherry pie in the past and I was never really a fan of it. So this time I used canned cherries and the pie turned out really sweet and pretty. The next time I use canned cherry pie filling I will doctor it a little with cornstarch because it's a bit runny when you cut a slice.

An apple pie for my nerds!

So this weekend I made an apple pie from Martha Stewart's Pies and Tarts cookbook. Every Tuesday the nerds we fight with get together to do arts and crafts so I thought I would make them a pie to try to make friends. Because who doesn't like pie? Well, unless you're on a diet.

Anyway, I made one big apple pie and two small pies for my sweet roommates.

Sally's Apple Pie

Today I visited my grandma Ruby in Alta, IA. She was the reason I started making pie. She didn't have any pie during our visit, but her neighbor lady Sally brought over this delicious slice of apple pie made from the apples on the tree at her farm. It was delicious. The apples were cut very thinly which let all of the butter, cinnamon and sugar melt in.

Sweet as Pie

Bust Magazine featured one of my favorite pie recipes in their February issue. You should pick up an issue and check it out.
